AEDs aren't ready when needed due to expired pads or batteries

Source: Scientific Reports 2022

But here's the problem

Research shows 1 in 6 public AEDs aren't ready for use when needed. The main cause? Expired electrode pads that nobody checked.

WorkSafe has identified AEDs with flat batteries, expired pads, and devices that fail when used. Most owners don't know when consumables expire until it's too late.

The most common mistake: discovering your pads are expired during an actual emergency.

Common issues found

  • Expired electrode pads — the cause of 83% of non-ready AEDs in one study
  • Flat batteries discovered during emergencies
  • AEDs failing to operate when actually used
  • Devices not visible or accessible when needed

Home AED Success

Australia, 2024

After her husband's first cardiac event, a wife purchased a home AED. When he collapsed again 18 months later, she used the device she'd kept maintained. He survived.

New: South Australia AED requirements from 2026

From January 2026, certain prescribed buildings in South Australia must install and maintain AEDs under the Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022. Buildings in scope must maintain devices "in accordance with manufacturer instructions" and keep appropriate records.

The question is: can you prove your AED was checked? Defib Hound creates the compliance record you need.

Common questions

How often should I inspect my AED?

Industry guidance recommends monthly inspections to check the status indicator, ensure pads and batteries aren't expired, and verify the device is clean and accessible. Defib Hound sends reminders to help you stay on schedule, and the QR code makes it easy to complete an inspection in under a minute.

Can anyone perform an inspection?

Yes. The QR code on your AED allows anyone with a smartphone to perform an inspection. They don't need an account or training. The guided checklist walks them through each step. This is perfect for delegating inspections to volunteers, staff members, or even neighbours.

What happens when pads or batteries expire?

We send reminders at 90, 30, 14, and 7 days before expiry (and on the expiry date). This gives you plenty of time to order replacements. After expiry, your device status changes to "Critical" in your dashboard. Expired pads may not stick properly or conduct electricity effectively, potentially preventing the device from delivering a shock when needed.

Is my data secure?

Absolutely. We use industry-standard encryption for all data transmission and storage. Your device locations aren't publicly visible unless you choose to share them. Inspection records are only accessible to you and anyone you authorise. We don't sell your data to third parties.

Can I change plans later?

Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time. If you upgrade, you'll be charged the prorated difference. If you downgrade, the remaining credit applies to your new plan. All your data is preserved when changing plans. If you exceed device limits on a lower plan, you'll need to archive devices to stay within limits.
